Pupil Premium Expenditure 2020-21


What is the Pupil Premium? The Pupil Premium was introduced in April 2011. The Pupil Premium funding is additional to the main school funding. The aim of the government is for this money to be used to close the gap in attainment nationally between disadvantaged children and other children. Each school is able to decide how the money they receive is spent.

What did we receive? For the financial year 2020-2021 we received approximately £40,340.

How did we use this money? The money was used to fund: additional adult support to provide intervention for groups of children & 1:1 work, up to one day per week family support worker, half a day a week counselling service, training and resources for staff on proven programmes to accelerate progress and additional resources for group work, intervention and SEN. This money supported children affected by school closures, offering pastoral and academic resources for our vulnerable pupils. This worked alongside our up funding. 

What has been the historic outcomes for children using funding? (Using 2019 data used as no formal end of year assessments at the end of academic year 2021. 

i). End of Key Stage 2 (Y6) In 2019 24% (7 children) of the children in Yr6 were identified as having been disadvantaged (eligible for and claiming free school meals at any time in the previous six years or looked after). A.) Attainment (Expected attainment at end Yr6) When compared to disadvantaged children nationally, in Reading - 57% achieved ARE (Age Related Expectation)  compared to 71% nationally, in Writing 57% achieved ARE compared to 76% nationally.  In maths – 57% achieved ARE compared to 75% nationally.

100% of our non-SEN, disadvantaged children (4 pupils) achieved ARE in reading, writing, SPAG and maths. Of these children, 25% (1 pupil) achieved GD in reading and writing, 50% (2 pupils) achieved GD in SPAG. 

ii). End of Key Stage 1 (Y2) In 2019, nine children in Yr2 were identified as having been disadvantaged. 67% of the children achieved ARE in reading, writing and maths so broadly in line with national statistics. These children made good progress from their attainment at the end of EYFS assessing against ELG.

iii) Gaps Between Disadvantaged Children and Other Pupils We have been working hard to reduce the identified gap between disadvantaged and non-disadvantaged children. The gap between the attainment of our disadvantaged children and non-disadvantaged children nationally has reduced. This means our disadvantaged children are achieving more highly, but not yet as highly as our other children. We need to focus on reducing in-school gaps identified this year so that our disadvantaged children can achieve as highly as our other children. In particular we are focussing on a closing the gap with disadvantaged children with gaps in learning as a result of school closure.

Pastoral Outcomes

All children at St Joseph’s are entitled and given enrichment opportunities supporting their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Through our pupil premium funding and subsequent spending strategy, children are accessing appropriate support, valuable resources, social opportunities and experiences irrespective of prohibitive factors that they may face outside of school. Additional pastoral support during the pandemic was offered through counselling sessions (via Anne Huggins, formally Zacchaeus Club)
