Reception 2026
Places are offered for Reception class by the Local Authority. Children in Birmingham can start school (Reception) in the September after their 4th birthday. Parents can apply for a place in the autumn of the year before their child turns four-years-old.
Open Days at our school are arranged each October / November to enable prospective Reception children and their parents to visit the school.
Applications for primary school entry in September 2026 opened at 9:00am on 1 October 2025. The statutory closing date was 11:59pm on 15 January 2026.
Applications for primary school entry received after 15 January 2026 will only be considered after applications received on time have been processed. Late applications will be processed after 16 April 2026.

In-Year Applications
An application can be made for a place for a child at any time outside the admission round and the child will be admitted where there are available places. An application should be made to the school by completing the in-year admissions application form which is available on our website (see below). A hard copy of the application form can be obtained by contacting the school office by telephone on (0121) 458 2458 or by emailing enquiry@sjo-lumenchristi.org.uk.
Completed application forms must be returned along with proof of date of birth for the pupil (birth certificate or passport) and proof of address (e.g. council tax bill), to St Joseph's Catholic Primary School, 117 Selly Oak Road, Kings Norton, B30 1HN either in person, by royal mail or by email via enquiry@sjo-lumenchristi.org.uk.
Where there are places available but more applications than places, the published oversubscription criteria, as set out in the admission arrangements for 2025/2026, will be applied. The full admission arrangements can be accessed here or by contacting the school office to request a hard copy. Parents are advised to read the admission arrangements carefully before making their application.
If there are no places available, the child will be added to the waiting list and further information relating to this will be included in the letter sent from the school advising you of the outcome of your application. Please see the admission arrangements for more details.
You will be advised of the outcome of your application in writing as soon as possible. Applicants must be informed of the outcome of their application within 15 school days of its receipt, but the aim is to notify applicants of the outcome of their application within 10 school days of its receipt.
You have the right to appeal to an independent appeal panel if your application is unsuccessful.
